ABOUT THE HISTORY
OF THE ALBARIÑO GRAPE
It is well known that the albariño grape variety, under the sweet sound of the atlantic breeze of the Arosa Estuary, found in this Salnes Valley its ideal microclimate. Not in vain, the Cister monks, established in the Armenteira monastery at the end of the XII century, paid from the very first moment much attention to it, teaching the local inhabitants the growing of the grapes and the elaboration of the albariño wine. In fact, and given the importance of this monastery in the history of the Cistercian Order, it was visited by its founder himself, Saint Bernard of Claraval.
Also today, after so many centuries, almost the totality of the albariña grape is grown and vinified in this Salnes Valley, “...full of old stone houses, with scents of grape in the hallways...”, as described by our illustrious fellow countryman Don Ramon de Valle Inclan.
Cambados is the indisputable world capital of Albariño wine. Here was born its “Fiesta del Albariño”, the second oldest wine festivity in Spain, celebrated every first sunday of August since more than 60 years ago.
